Tae Kwon-Do Hits Corwen
Club Launch
On Thursday 12th January, 2006 Tae Kwon-Do hit Corwen with a fantastic introduction and demonstration class made up of students from local clubs in Mold, Flint, Ruthin and Ruabon. Also in attendance were Mr Ady Jones 5th Dan World Champion and Mr Martin Williams 5th Dan Silver World Medallist who performed fantastic patterns.
The idea of the class was to show all the different aspects of Tae Kwon-Do which included patterns, sparring and solid wood board breaking. Corwen Tae Kwon-Do Club is supported by
Denbighshire County Council Leisure Services. The children who took part in the demonstration were between the ages of 7 and 14 and ranged from white belt beginners to black belts. Jade Jones, Leon Lowe-Williams and Thomas Smith who are all 1st Dan black belts performed a black belt pattern together on the evening. One of the most entertaining parts of the demonstration class was the kids tag team sparring. This was carefully refereed by Mr Williams 5th Dan who made sure that everyone was sparring safely and within the rules of the
T.A.G.B. Local people were impressed with the standard of all the children who took part. The highlight of the demonstration was the wood breaking. Each piece of wood was 1inch (2.5cm) thick. One of the most fantastic board breaks was by Mr Ady Jones 5th Dan who performed a spectacular high section spinning reverse turning kick. With a few quick measures Mr Jones smashed the board into two pieces with his fantastic kick. Board breaking is only done by adult black belts within the T.A.G.B. Board breaking helps students to focus power
and also ensure that the technique is correctly carried out.
Everyone who attend the opening of the club were impressed with the standard of everyone who took part. Instructor Ian Morton wishes to thank everyone who helped with the opening.
Club Awarded Grant

The grant will also be used to promote the club in the local area and hopefully create a larger membership. There will be special introduction sessions held in local schools in the coming months to promote the club. Thank you Denbighshire Leisure Services and in particular Mr Gareth John for all their help and support with the application
Success At The Welsh Open
On Sunday the 21st May, Reme, Peter & Dave went down to Cardiff to compete in the Welsh Open Championships. There were over 900 competitors from clubs all over the UK. Reme did really well winning her sparring division and came home with a trophy bigger than her!!!
Dave also managed to come home with a 3rd place trophy in his sparring division. Peter performed an excellent pattern on the day and really enjoyed taking part in such a big competition. We were even treated to a fantastic final in the men’s middleweight black belt sparring division, with World Champions Warren Vice and Andrew Deer. It was a fantastic display of Tae Kwon-Do sparring by both of them. Warren Vice won the fight and added Welsh Open Champion to his many titles. Well done to Reme, Peter and Dave for competing.
Fun At The Welsh Closed
The Welsh Closed Championships where held in Cardiff on the 30th April. Instructor Ian Morton and club visitors Reme Hernandez and Peter Morton went down to try their luck at sparring and patterns. Dave Garner and Sabrina Lloyd also attended to have a look at what TAGB competitions are all about and how they are organised. Both of them were impressed with all the events that took place, especially the tag team sparring (which is great fun to take part in) and left Cardiff looking forward to the next competition where they will be able to have a go. Everyone had a good day. Clubs from North Wales came back with many medals and trophies. Ian and Reme even managed to come home with bronze medals for the tag team sparring events.
Summer Camp 2006 -
Pwllheli

On the 22nd Sept club instructor Ian Morton and members of club, Carol, Sam and Sara Mault and Jessica, Courtney and
Rachel Law went to Pwllheli for the 8th annual North Wales Summer Camp. Although it wasn’t really Summer the sun was shinning and we were all in the party mood. There were over 200 people at this year’s camp, which was organised
by Mr Saunders 5th Dan Black Belt.
Following a late night of partying on the Friday, Mr Sergiew, 7th Dan Black Belt and TAGB Committee member, came to the camp to do a 2hrs session. It was a very tiring one I can tell you, but also very enjoyable.
More training followed on Sunday with Mr Saunders 5th Dan, Mr Hunt 4th Dan and Mr Williams 5th Dan. Over the weekend there were opportunities to go swimming and enjoy other activities on offer. Summer camps are great and get better and better each year, make sure you come next year!
Cobra Kai
Training Session - Corwen
On Thursday 28th September, North Wales Instructors, Mr Morton 1st Dan, Mr Pritchard 3rd Dan, Mr Hunt 4th & Mr Jones 5th Dan came to Corwen for a special Cobra Kai training session.
The idea of the session was to promote the Fight Night taking place on 29th October at the Tranmere Rovers Football Club, in aid of Clatterbridge Cancer Research. The event will feature squads from three areas across the North West and a squad from North Wales, which is being coached by Mr Jones. Corwen students Chris Lloyd and Dave Garner are members of the North Wales Squad along with Reme and Instructor Ian Morton.
The session was fun and exciting for all the students who took part. At the end of the session there was a demonstration of sparring by Mr Pritchard and Mr Hunt referred by Mr Morton. Mr Pritchard went on to win the fight following the use of the famous 'Crane technique' – "which no one can defend!"
Mr Jones finished the demonstration by performing the same pattern that he won the World Championships with in 2005.

Fight Night - charity event
The North Wales Squad performed really well at the charity fight night on the 29th October 2006 at the Tranmere Rovers Football Club. The event was a sell out with over 450 spectators and the atmosphere around the mat was electric.
The event featured teams for North Wales, Chester & Wirral, Ellesmere Port and West Kirby. The North Wales Squad was made up of students and instructors from clubs in Ruabon, Denbigh, Ruthin, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, Flint, Mold, Deeside and Corwen. The North Wales Squad had a very successful night with lots of trophies and medals coming out way…without too many bumps and bruises.
Corwen student, Dave Garner, was in the North Wales Squad and performed really well in his fight, well done Dave.
The event was organised by Mr Saunders 5th Dan (Chester & Wirral) and was in aid of Clatterbridge Cancer Research with all proceeds going to them. The teams were split into divisions according to grade, age and sex.
North Wales won two of the Junior divisions and gave an exceptional account of themselves in all the others. Team coach Mr Jones 5th Dan (Ruabon) said All members of the North Wales Squad have done fantastically well, both in their skills and their attitudes, we’ve been working hard towards this event and it’s great that we can showcase some of our talent while raising money for a good cause.
Mr Jones will be holding North Wales Squad training sessions once a month in the Wrexham area. These sessions are open to all North Wales students who have a TAGB membership. Your instructor will let you know when these sessions have been arranged.
The event also featured a kicking demonstration by two hillbillies (Mr Jones and Mr Saunders) which was fantastic. The junior awards were present by Jason Macattere. The total raised for the Clatterbridge Cancer research on the nigh was over £3000. Mr Jones wishes to thank the teams sponsors Meuig Davies and Rob Young of Terry’s Auto Repairs based in Chirk.
Club Instructor Grading -
Club Instructor, Ian Morton, has been promoted to 2nd Dan Black Belt by the T.A.G.B. Ian took the grading at the T.A.G.B. Academy in Bristol on the 19th October and was examined by five 7th Dan Black Belts including the Chairman of the T.A.G.B., Mr Dave Oliver. The grading consisted of intensive floor work, patterns, sparring, hand strike & foot strike board breaking and theory. Ian says, 'The grading was hard, but I was happy with my performance on the day'. Ian had to wait four days before being informed by phone by his Instructor, Mr Williams 5th Dan that he had passed.
Since becoming a 1st Dan Black Belt in 2004, Ian has regularly trained with his Instructor Mr Williams (Mold/Flint) and
also with Mr Jones 5th Dan (Ruabon). Regularly training with Mr Williams and Mr Jones and other local instructors really helped to prepare Ian for the grading. When you become a 1st Dan you are given three complicated patterns to learn as well as having to keep on top of the nine colour belt patterns. Before you are able to go for the 2nd Dan grading you are required to pass a two part T.A.G.B. Umpires Course which is taught by Mr Sergiew and Mr Donnelly 7th Dan Black Belts. You are also required to attend three pre-grading sessions with Mr Peros at his Academy in Cardiff
Becoming a 2nd Dan Black Belt shows the hard work that students have done since gaining their 1st Dan. In Tae Kwon-Do, there is always a goal to aim for, you never stop progressing in your skills and knowledge of the art.
Student Of The Year Awards 2006
The first Corwen TKD Club 'Student of Year' awards where presented on the 14th December 2006 at the Corwen Pavilion. The winner of the junior award was Sam Mault and the senior award went to Sabrina Lloyd.
They are very keen students who have worked very hard throughout the year. Both Sam and Sabrina are supportive of the club and helped make it a success. They have also performed very well at gradings over the year. Student of Year Awards are given to students who, in the instructor's view, have trained hard, are keen to learn, set good examples and are willing to help others. They should also show in their training that they follow the 5 tenets of Tae Kwon-Do; Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control and Indomitable spirit.
Well done to Sam and Sabrina.
